Linux Kernel Selection Guide for Production Use - Tsugikazu Shibata, NEC

Adoption of Linux kernel is expanding from IT industry to broader range of another industries such as Supercomputer, Smart-phone and automotive. Every industries are using Linux kernel for their own products. However, sometimes, engineers are facing many problem and security issues after decide the kernel version. If she or he picked right version, there may not become such situation. So, how can we choose best kernel version? In this session, I will present kernel development process at first and how bugs and security fixes are merged in upstream. Then provide possible choice such as upstream kernel, LTS and LTSI with pros and cons. Also, Discuss about difference between community development and holding patches in ih-house without merging in upstream will be presented. Finally, Benefits about LTSI (Long Term Support Initiative) as a choice of best kernel will also be discussed.
