Using Linux Media Controller for Wayland/Weston Renderer - Takanari Hayama, IGEL

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Wayland is a simple display server protocol, and Weston is a reference implementation of the Wayland server. Wayland/Weston is considered to replace X especially in IVI. Wayland/Weston currently supports standards such as OpenGL/ES, and DRM/KMS as a reference.

Takanari Hayama has designed a new Weston renderer which uses Linux Media Controller Framework to compose surfaces. Linux Media Controller Framework is a standard Linux Kernel framework that allows use of media devices from the user space. On Renesas R-Car, an image processing unit is exposed as media devices of Media Controller.

In this presentation, he explains the architecture of Wayland/Weston, and how he designed a new Weston renderer using Media Controller Framework. He also explains some optimizations implemented in his renderer. This allows to allocate more 3D GPU time for more sophisticated applications.
